Once e-tests are completed they can be marked on screen or go through an automated marking process in which results are electronically generated.

On-screen marking involves the electronic transfer of learner scripts to an external examiner. The examiner assesses the learner's work online and enters the results into a secure system for distribution to candidates. On-screen marking does not necessarily mean that there has been e-testing. The original learner scripts may have been digitized or scanned into electronic format.

Automated marking eliminates the need for human examiner input and allows for the rapid return of results. The test software captures learners' answers and generates results using a predetermined marking scheme. This system is usually applied to multiple choice formats.
