What is e-assessment?
E-assessment is the use of technology - PCs, laptops, PDAs, mobile phones and other media - to deliver e-testing or to enable learners to create e-portfolios for collecting evidence towards a qualification.
E-assessment as a single term describes a range of learning and assessment activities that have distinct meanings in their own contexts e.g. electronic marking, online assessment, computer-aided assessment and direct on-screen testing are all referred to as e-assessment.
The terminology of e-assessment has become increasingly complex as more and more software suppliers and developers have entered the market. Awarding bodies, practitioners, teachers and others need to understand what the new terms and abbreviations mean when making use of e-assessment tools and products.
To try and unravel any confusion, QCA and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) have reviewed the terminology used in the field of e-assessment and produced a glossary of terms. E-assessment is defined in the glossary as:
"The end-to-end electronic assessment processes where ICT is used for the presentation of assessment activity and the recording of responses. This includes the end-to-end assessment process from the perspective of learners, tutors, learning establishments, awarding bodies and regulators, and the general public."
