In the past few years there has been significant growth in the uptake and development of e-assessment.
Since 2001 awarding bodies, working with the regulatory bodies, have been developing and implementing e-assessment, particularly e-testing, for a range of qualifications.
From only a few qualifications awarded via e-assessment in 2001, there are now approximately 500,000 awards every year in the UK. It is likely that within five years a significant range of qualifications across the UK will have at least one element being assessed using e-assessment. Several will probably be awarded totally on the basis of some form of electronic assessment.
The use of e-portfolios is increasing. Ofqual has worked with awarding bodies to establish agreed protocols to support the use of e-portfolios to capture, verify and certificate evidence towards NVQs and other qualifications.
