e-Assessment: Guide to effective practice
The four UK Qualifications regulators are pleased to announce the publication of e-Assessment: Guide to effective practice. The guide has been produced to support the development of e-assessment opportunities for learners within UK qualifications frameworks, to stimulate the use of e-assessment through providing centres, and to support quality improvement in these centres.
The guide covers the use of both e-testing and the use of e-portfolios for assessment. The regulators have developed the guide in consultation with awarding bodies and centres in different parts of the UK, and in particular through 12 pilot centres that have used and evaluated the guide in their e-assessment work. Although the guide has been developed primarily to support e-assessment in the post-school sector, elements of the guide will be of interest to schools and universities.
The guide is not a regulatory document. It seeks to identify and stimulate effective practice in the provision of e-assessment opportunities, but it does not require awarding bodies to comply with the practices and procedures set out in the guide. The regulators will continue to work with partner organisations that share an interest in the quality of e-assessment opportunities to develop future versions of the guide that reflect current practice in both e-testing and the use of e-portfolios for assessment.
Three versions of the Guide have now been produced, one for England, Wales and Northern Ireland and one for Scotland that reflects a different qualification system used there. A Welsh language version is also available. Users may also wish to download individual sections of the guide. Finally, there are a number of annexes and checklists in the guide. These are also available to download separately. If you would like word versions of the Guide please contact Fran Dowler at fran.dowler@ofqual.gov.uk.
The guide will be periodically updated and revised editions will be available from this website.
